March 2025 HFF meeting

HFF Meeting: I assume we are all enjoying the weather and if I am not mistaken it is bringing up ideas of fishing soon. However, we know Indiana weather and please remember it did snow on April 1st in 1909…We will meet at the Legion on March 18th with dinner at 6:00 and the program at 7:00

The meeting this month will basically have two parts. We will be having a presentation on Indiana entomology by Sawyer Scheid. Sawyer will also be presenting a lecture on entomology as part of our adventure with the 4H events coming up soon. He was also the winner of the Indiana State Fair Entomology presentation. I am sure we will get valuable information about bugs we can transfer to our fishing…

The second part of the meeting will be filling the 50 fly boxes for the 4H event. Mike Donovan has the 50 boxes, it is up to us to provide the flies. If you have tied 50 of your favorites bring them, if you don’t have 50 of the same fly bring what you have… This is going to be a fun time…

Looking forward to seeing everyone on the18th. Bring some stories and some flies.

HFF Program with Monroe County 4H: We are moving forward. The program will take place Wednesday, 3/19/25 and Saturday, 3/22/25.

The Wednesday session is a Zoom meeting from 7pm to 8:30pm ish. We will be at the Purdue Extension office at 3400 S Walnut St. This will consist of a short presentation on “What is fly fishing”, “Fish ecology and entomology”, “Fly tying – Materials and Demo”, and “The Basics of fly casting” (with a practice rod).

The Saturday session will be at the Four Winds Lakeside Inn and Marina, 10am to 3pm. These sessions will be “hands on” experiences of the above topics plus some games and a presentation on further adventures in fly fishing – trout out west, saltwater, etc.

You would be welcome to attend any and all sessions, the Wednesday presentations are covered and will be short. Saturday we could use all the help we can get. Particularly with fly tying and casting. If you would like to do a presentation on “Adventures In Fly Fishing” as a closing to the day, let me know.

Mike Donovan is collecting flies from the tiers to make up boxes of flies for the kids. If you would like to contribute, we need 50 flies. You could bring the flies to the next meeting on the 18th, we may be boxing the flies up then.

We are expecting around 50 kids to attend.

If you have any questions, just let me know.
